When some say 'diversify' what exactly does that mean and how do you tend to find is the best way to do this - especially of you're a novice?

Diversify in your case is easy. You will have 28K in a single share- too much of your net worth. Esp as it is your employer.

Overall diversification means different asset classes like property (start with the one you live in) Cash, Pensions and investments.

Within the pensions and investments you can again diversify thru assets like Equities Bonds and Property.

In Equities you can diversify further. Single shares (esp one) is the least diversified. Then you can diversify by investing in funds which hold the shares of companies (from 20-100's). This means any one company can go bust, but you would not lose all your money just a fraction. Thn go can diversify further, making sure your funds cover not just the UK market but the USA, Europe, asia and emerging markets.

£60k? We have two individual accounts with £20k in each but they said that's all we can have. Can we do a joint account?
If that's two each, four accounts (£80k) in total (opened under previous rules), then no, you can't have a joint account as well. Under current rules you can have one sole each plus one joint, giving £60k.

    Must be Pearson plc..

As others have said, I would transfer them into your/your wife's respect S&S ISA and sell some shares as necessary for a balanced/diversifed portfolio.
