second opinions please

just bought one of those micro cases http://www.hometechprojects.com/wp-content/gallery/htpc-build-2013/htpc_build_2013-32.jpg?i=2030638468

this it with one drive bay http://resources.mini-box.com/online/ACC-IO-Shield-DN2800MT/moreimages/Mini-Box-PCIe-1x-Riser-adapter-b4.jpg

and closed http://www.short-circuit.com/images/products/m350/large/0.jpg

2 drive bays installed http://blog.jamiebaldanza.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/IMG_7470.jpg

setup is a i3 4170 (45w), 1 x ssd 1 x 15mm 2.5in drive (2t) asrock z97m-itx/ac Alaska k25 low profile HSF (rated to I tthink 75 watts) ,

I think the problem is 2 drive bays , however I have fitted the ssd over the HSF (more room)

hammered it to hell even played games whilst converting AVI files , 64.7 max using openhardware monitor

to high or not , I am reluctant to fit a 35w "t" cpu as it needs some go ,

edit: scale out ,

Comments

  • edit , new vid driver (win 10) from intels website instead of asrock , settled down to 49-50 when being hammered

50 at full load is actually pretty good, 64 is absolutely fine too when CPU at 100%, wouldn't worry about it. If it gets over 70-75 for long periods I might look at rearranging air flow. You won't damage anything unless you're running approaching 100 at which point it will most likely auto shutdown before any lasting damage occurs
  • ok , as hot as that ? and auto shutdown? , makes me happier then

will try and shorten and rearrange some cables tomorrow , I can fit the optional 40x40x10mm fan behind the front panel , trouble is , there are 2 sticks of memory in the way ,

    cheers

Actually, shutting down is a very rare occurrence on modern chips - they will first back their clock speeds off in an attempt to bring thermals down (clocking as low as 800MHz).

If you notice the performance being sporadic when under load you may find that it's hitting thermal limits but recovering a little more gracefully than shutting down.

From all I've read however, throttling tends to happen closer to 90c temperatures than 65!

cheers , I have open hardware monitor sat working in the background seems I misread it 64.7 was the fan percentage , you can set it at 5 settings in bios ,

running at 46 deg ,now max has been 71 degrees today

the fan speed is stupid , it actually cools better with the fan running slower

I have a case of about the same size, but all aluminium.......I don't game, but, 4K video gets it up to the mid 80's. everything else is anything between 42 and mid 60's. Intel Core i7 3770. AMD Radeon 7700 series Graphics. 16GB RAM
It only has an air intake on one side and out on the other. Not as ventilated as the one in pics. Only one small fan.
Not really had any problems with it shutting down or anything.
