Laptop for 12 year old?

Hi

Not sure if posting this in the right place but my son has just had his 12th birthday and wants to spend his birthday money on a laptop.

He wants it for playing games on (primarily Minecraft) and also for school (Microsoft Word and Powerpoint). He's got about £500 as he has saved money from last year too.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as I haven't got a clue. I've heard that Lenovo machines are decent or so he tell me!

Thanks in advance,

For laptops check http://www.hotukdeals.com/search?action=search&keywords=laptop, but I'd think twice before taking a £500 laptop to school, especially on a regular basis. Do they not have computers there?

Consider a desktop for home and a cheap laptop for school - if it's really needed.

I would recommend HP until today... Been a user of HP for 15 years but just had poor customer service online yesterday, so now I won't recommend. However ASUS are pretty good, I use my dad's and that's a rather nice machine!

    Hi
    (Microsoft Word and Powerpoint).

It's worth checking out first if your child's school is in the Microsoft Education program in which case you can use Office at home for free on upto five devices.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
  • Ok thanks everyone. I'll have a look. Sorry, I didn't explain that very well; he doesn't want it to take to school, just to do homework on at home.

Is there a reason he wants a laptop instead of a desktop ?

also, is it just minecraft he plays, or will there be other games?
gaming and laptops dont generally go well together

Haven't really consider a Desktop to be honest. I'll look in to it. Thanks for your replies.

I would second that - has office "version," don't need to buy any updates/security, not sure about games though, you would have to check that out.
