We are going to stay at Greenacres, Porthmadog soon and are trying to find a pub that is within walking distance of the site. We don't want to be restricted to staying on the site and using their facilities only. Any ideas please?

There is only one pub in walking distance:

There is also a Spar on the main road and a fish and chip shop next to it.
You could, technically, walk into Porthmadog, but it's quite a trek.0 -
WeAreGhosts are there any pubs on other sites ? I often go down that way for a day on the beach but not stayed there for some years . I wouldn't like to walk into town . There is a boozer on site but have a captive audience so beer is expensive and not the best according to friends that stay . Even porthmadog hasn't got great pubs IMHO:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Porthmadog now has one very good pub (or at least it should be good based on reputation, I haven't personally been there yet). The Australia on the High Street has been taken over by the people behind the Albion Ale House in Conwy. The owners are a consortium made up of Conwy Brewery, Great Orme Brewery, Bragdy Nant and Purple Moose Brewery. Purple Moose are from Porthmadog which I assume is why they've expanded out in that direction.

n.b. Ignore the bad reviews on TripAdvisor from 2014, the new owners only took over in 2015.

Regards Greenacres I've liased with Mrs FA because once upon a time, a very long time ago, her parents owned the Cardigan View site which is more of less next door to Greenacres. She's not aware of anywhere closeby other than the Tafarn Glanaber. You could in theory walk along the coast to Criccieth but only when the tide is right out. If you got cut off and had to return by road it's a huge detour to get back. The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water
And I look like a tramp and tramps like us

Nope, they're all small tourer sites, some having only a few statics to rent.
There is a camping site at the end of the road (turn right instead of going onto the beach, and follow road round) and there is a building on the right which used to be a cafe, then was some kind of bar, and I'm not sure what it is now. When I was last there it looked like it was owned by a bunch of louts (I didn't venture inside) ... As I say, not sure what it has turned into ... might get lucky and it's back to being a bar again.
It's a bit in the middle of nowhere, is Greenacres. Course, some people like that. There's always the bus into Porthmadog.
The best pub I can think of is The Castle Inn at Criccieth, next to the train station.0 -

I believe that The Australia has only "reappeared" in the past couple of months, although it was definitely up and running when I was in Porthmadog a couple of weeks ago (unfortunately I had the kids with me so I couldn't really pop in for a quick beer). It had been renamed Y Gestiana by the previous owners but the new owners have reverted back to the old name. Y Gestiana was the name of the last ship to be built in Porthmadog but it sank off the coast of Nova Scotia on it's maiden voyage so it was maybe tempting fate to name a pub after it!
The Albion people have also taken over the Bridge Inn in Conwy (the one next to the roundabout by the castle). The Bridge will be more "family friendly" and will be serving food whereas the Albion will continue to be a traditional alehouse. The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water
