OK so PPI claims have been around for a while now and to date I havent checked if I have paid. Sad I know but there are reasons of sorts. I know there are loads of threads and info here and other sources about how to claim, but its hard to get something specific and there is just so much info I just get a brain freeze and forget about it. So I'll ask a few basic questions here and see if someone can advise.

1) How far back can I claim

2) I know that in the past I have definitely had PPI but dont know who with. How do I check. I dont have back data from my bank

3) I changed bank, from Northern to Halifax, sometime between 1998 -2003. Can I go back to Northern for info, and will Halifax give me all my back data since being with them?

4) As I said, I dont know any companies I had PPI with, how can I find this out from any data the banks give me

5) Would it be easier just to hand it over to a claims company to do the hard work, even though it means a fee to them. If so anyone recommend a suitable reliable and honest company
I started out with nothing......And still have most of it left:p

  • Ref your first question, I called the Ombudsman "tongue-in-cheek" 6 months ago regards a mis-selling of an Endowment Policy I took out way back in 1983, and ended in 1987. The policy was with the old Gateway Building Society, who became Woolwich, then Barclays. The Ombudsman told me to submit a claim to Barclays regardless of the time lapse, as all claims will be assessed individually. I just received a cheque from Barclays last week!

I know it wasn't PPI, but the same principle applies - mis-selling.

As to your final question re hiring a third party, don't do anything before you talk to the Ombudsman, they are very very helpful indeed!
