changing address with DVLA

I have recently moved away from where my vehicle is registered, although as I am only on short term contracts with work, and in rented accommodation of a month’s tenancy, should I be changing my address each time I move? Currently it is registered to my parental address. No problem if I was permanent but how do people deal with this when there won’t be a long term permanent address?

your details (licence and V5 etc) need to be at a "serviceable" address , if you are in regular contact with your parents , then that is satisfactory , however if you are overnight parking the vehicle at a place other than the named one on the insurance , you may have problems

As long as they open your mail in case anything important comes through there wont be a problem.

Have you notified your insurance though, thats more of an issue.

I had my car(s) registered at my mum's address for 3 years while I was at University - I moved 3 times in that period, but I told my insurance where the car would be kept, and my mum opened my mail, and didn't cause me any issues. Can't see the DVLA wanting to keep changing the logbook every time you move to a temporary address when they have a permanent and relevant address on record.

no, i haven't contacted my insurance (as i had assumed i would need to change details with DVLA first). I wasn't sure if the registered address could be different from my current address, if so i guess that would be the best option. I assume i could run into difficulties should i ever need to claim away from original, parental address?

yes multiple claims for damage whilst parked on a street a long way from your house could cause problems , also postal codes can make a huge difference in quote prices , IE: PR1 (preston lancs) £450 ford focus , however 300 yds away PR2 , it was £365 ,

Thanks for your input. DVLA do only require a correspondence address, insurance have been informed of my current overnight address. there is no problem in having a different registered and overnight address.
