SHould I pay it?

Hi got evicted friday, before moving out the landlord asked me to put my mattress outside for the council to pick up, I thought fair enough if that's what he wants. Then he asks me to call the council on my eviction day to get it taken away, again fair enoguh if he is willing to pay for it. Told him I didn't have time, he then asked me to ring them monday to have 'my' mattress taken away. Nows where it gets funny, I lived there 8 years, and when the mattress went a year or so ago I told him and asked him if it was ok if I replaced it. He said yes, now I would assume this is still his mattress as it's a replacement for the one I wore out, but I did get a cheap one, and again it needs replacing. Having jsut rung the council as he has jsut sent me a text asknig me to ring them, I fonud out you pay in advance, hence him pestering me to ring them and not do it himself. The question is I am not sure I should be paying the £7.50 to have it taken away. WOuld have thought as he supplied a mattress and I moved out leaving behind a worn mattress it shouldn't be my responsibility.

But I haven't arranged mail forwarding as left amicably (at the mo) as this costs around £20 I believe and was just going to pop to see him and pick up post. Now £20 is dearer than £7.50, should I pay it? (evicted as his daughter moved in).

    You say you were evicted.

Did you have a tenancy agreement and were you given notice? How was that notice served?

Did you pay a deposit? How much? Was it protected? Where?

Was there an inventory and was the mattress mentioned in it? Why did you pay for the replacement mattress?

What do you have in writing?
    * Is there an inventory from when you moved in? What does it say about mattress?
    * when you changed the mattress, what did the LL say in writing about this? Did he grant permission to dispose of the original? What was said about changing it? Exact wording.

I suspect the mattress is his so

    a) I would not leave it outside
    b) I would not call, let alone pay, the council.

However, if the mattress is clearly yours, then it is up to you to remove it.

Don't be so tight, pay for a postal redirection. That way you won't be reliant on his goodwill to forward your post.

This. You don't know that his daughter will keep your post, she might return to sender, or just bin it.
    Plus, it's taking the liberty.
  • So your options are:
    1. Pay a total of £27.50 for the mattress removal and postal redirection (Cheaper if done over a longer term)
    2. A shedload of hassle, time, and potential bad feeling...

I know which one I would go for.

    3. Pay the £7.50 and save £20 as well as the "shedload of hassle".

  • Thanks you seem to have come to a verdict here i am being too tight. Ok. By the way lived with the landlord for the last 8 years, and the daughter has stayed there on and off over those 8 years so have watched her grow up.

Just kind of get fed up of renters being asked to pay for things that I don't think they should have to. Last time was when I threaded a light bulb in the wrong way and he charged me the £70 repair job. Officially you pay your rent and it's the landlords job to sort out maintenance/repairs not yours. But I happily paid it as he coudl have jsut put the rent up by £70 per month! And he has been good in that way, went up once in the 8 years I was there.

Also feel somewhat guilty that he agreed for me to have virgin installed when I moved in, lo and behold when I went to move out and pulled my units out, massive damp patch around the virgin installation. For this reason I didn't ask for my deposit back, am hoping he is not expecting me to pay towards/for that as well!

What's this got to do with the question that the OP is asking?

The third set of questions was trying to work out to whom the mattress belonged, which is pretty pertinent, and whether the LL was trying it on.

The other questions were to work out whether the OP should be getting annoyed at being kicked out or not and whether there was a deposit that they risked not getting back.
