iTunes slow podcast downloads

I recently bought a new Asus DSL-AC68U modem router with current firmware. Since then, iTunes takes forever to download podcasts - about 5 hours each! I have tried on Windows 7 and on Windows 10 and both are the same. iTunes is the latest version. My wife's desktop computer (Win 8.1) is doing the same on her iTunes account.
To deepen the mystery, if I update podcasts directly using my iPod, without using iTunes, there is no problem and everything downloads as normal.
I have altered nothing in the Windows firewall, but have turned it off just to check. No difference.
Any suggestions - apart from ditching iTunes!
