npower prepayment meter

I have been with npower for several years using a prepayment meter for both gas and electricity. I have never been in debit with them, infact I have always been in credit, until I received a gas bill stating that I owed £328 and they would be taking this weekly at £8 from my meter when I top up, I have attempted to ring npower but have had no luck getting through, and have emailed and am still awaiting a reply, they have recently changed the gas meter, how can I be in debt on a prepayment meter?

  • Hi, the debt would be shown on your prepayment gas meter. There are two types of debt. Standing charge debt which be shown on the first screen. That would be a build up standing charge if you dont credit the meter very often. The other debt relates to true debt which is shown on screen 26.This would be from either debt from a former credit meter or even debts for damaged meters and court warrants and locksmiths charges. To see the debt screen 26 you have to have the card inserted and press and hold the red button till it beeps, then scroll through all the screens.Screen 27 would show the repayment per week would could be from £3.50 to a max of £16. If there are no debts on the meter then its just the usual Npower mess ups on billing

Post a legible image of the bill they have sent you (obliterate any personal info first) and hopefully someone will be able to explain it for you.

    Otherwise we'd just be guessing...

Is it a bill or a statement?

If there is no debts on meter on the first screen ( shows as money owed ) and nothing on screen 26 then you dont owe any money.

That's a dangerous assumption to make - it is entirely possible for a balance to not be on the meter but exist on the billing system.
Balances can be sent down to the meter when you top up, so if there is no balance today, there may be tomorrow.

I don't think anyone here will be able to help - npower will be able to explain what has happened in your case.

It could be that the meter was installed to help pay off a bill, but the full balance wasn't sent, or some balance got removed when the meter was reset/had a fault.
It could be a billing error and when they took the old meter out have out the wrong reading in.
You may have had credit applied to your meter in error, which needs paying back.

    Good luck
