Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? I got the TV less than 3 weeks ago - it's a Panasonic Viera TH50PX70. I've only noticed it the past week or so. It does it about 3-4 times a day. Sky stays on and the TV standby light stays green - it's just the screen goes black and there's no sound. If I turn Sky off and back on again the TV comes on.

I've also noticed about half a dozen times, what looks like interference on the bottom 6 inches or so, of the screen. If I turn the TV off and on it goes away.

Could it be the cables or anything? The shop I bought it from supplied the cables.

  • i had a problem with my tv going off i found out it was when i was playing with my sons radio control toy it somehow was interfering with my tv, make sure that no other remote controls etc.. are on the same radio frequency as your tv, if so seperate the electrical items and see............

It could be another remote sending a command to the tv when you press a button on it so try all the buttons on all the remotes you have and see if you can find out which one is causeing the problem.

Do you have anyother devices that use infrared? lots of mobiles have ir, PSP's some toys.

If you suspect the tv to be faulty then try not to use any ir devices, if it still goes off then its a fault with the TV, return it to your supplier.

The only remote controls we have in the livingroom is the Sky, the dvd and the TV ones. I usually just use the Sky one. There were no mobiles in the livingroom when it went off. My daughter sometimes plays with her Nintendo DS in the livingroom - would that count?

Could it maybe be the Sky box as it's connected to the phoneline? I only got Sky HD the same day as the TV went in - the Sky box we had before wasn't plugged into the phone. Would Sky know if I unplugged it? They said it had to be connected for 12 months but i'd rather it wasn't.

    The DS doesnt have ir
If you are worried that any other device may be causeing it to go off then stop useing it, unplug the phone line if it makes you feel better it shouldnt make any difference.

the likleyhood is that the config for the sky remote is the cause a stray command from button its like the old 1 4 all remotes sometimes the volume control was the channel up and down or select turned the tv on/off.

press all the buttons on the sky remote and see if the tv goes off. other than the power button.

You could disconnect the sky box and tune your tv in and try useing it on the remote that came with the tv for a day or so. It could be someone playing a joke on you walking past with a remote for your TV and just switching it off from out side. I used to do that with my PSP I have some remote control software on it it really annoyed people ;)

A variation on this would be to setup your SKY remote for another brand of TV (in another room) and dont ever press the TV button - at least that way you could still watch SKY!

Remember to only use the TV remote for volume etc just for a couple of days to see what happens.

Check the interconnect leads from the sky box to the TV are properly inserted, just an outside chance that one may not be fully inserted leading to an intermittent connection thus causing your problems.

If your TV power light stays green it is unlikely to be going to standby

The more I think about it the more I think it may be the Sky box. As you say, the TV light stays green (so does the Sky box though), and to get it back on I switch the Sky box off and back on again, and then everything's fine.

Thanks for your replies. I did move the TV about a week or so ago, to clean behind it. I could have loosened something then (I hope!)

Yes, sorry, I didn't make that very clear (especially with the title of the thread! :o )

I can't tune in the TV without the Sky box as we have no other aerial - everything we get is through Sky.
