Unistalled Norton- now what?

I had Norton 2003 which I hadn't updated. It seemed to be slowing my PC down, so I unistalled it and on some advice from this forum, installed AVG virus and spyware and OH goodness, its slowed it even more. So much so, it took 45 mins just to open my email. So I had to unistall that too. Now I've got no protection ( although i know that with an old edition of Norton I wasn't really protected anyway) Is there a good free programme that is not going to grind my PC to a halt? Or will I be better buying one?

Have you uninstalled Norton completely? It is notorious for being a nightmare to remove...

I took Norton of my PC a few months ago and installed AVG and it flies...

Try the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of the !!!!!! completely

  • dont worry about it, run your computer without anti-virus software like I do. juts dont do anything stupid like click on dodgy links or download fake filesd etc and you wont get infected. use online scanners periodically to test for infection

Thanks folks, I used the Removing Notyon Tool as directed to on this site. It does seem to have removed it, but I'll check thoroughly later. . Mascherano, which online scanner do you use?

Did you configure AVG after installing it? Are you sure that it wasn't doing an initial scan of your system when your computer was slow. You don't have to alow it to scan when it wants to. Millions of users find AVG works very well, so I would give it another go. Personally I think that it's rather sill to have no active anti-virus installed.

I'm not a techy but I can say that AVG is far better than Norton - again it took us a long time to get rid of it!

AVG is brilliant - we run it on the lap top and the main machine and it is always up dating with new updates, try again it's worth it!

Totally agree, the AVG daily scan makes everything run like a dog! I just disable it and scan as required.

If you're happy to pay for a suite, then I'd recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 7 which is about £35 for a yearly license.

NOD32 is also worth considering too, and like Kaspersky requires payment for a yearly license.

OK, I'm going to give AVG another go, maybe just the virus programme first, then run a spyware check periodically.

  • Lavasoft Adaware (Free)
    Spybot Seek & Destroy (Free)
    Grisoft AVG (Free)
    ZoneAlarm (Free)

All the above I have been using for several years and I visit sites you would not send your mother-in-law to. Most AntiVirus/Firewalls have their plus & minus's so picking something Free helps. AVG has daily updates and seems to be on top all the threats. For serious spyware problems Spyware Doctor by PC-Tools seems to be the answer, a full 12month license is available on eBay for £11.00.
