Wedding venue went into administration months ago, go to cancel & they've been bought

Hi,

Our wedding venue went into administration in February 2015 (We are due to get married at the end of October 2015). I rang the hotel as soon as we heard and spoke with the administrator, he confirmed that they were going to try and sell the hotel, in the mean time we do not need to pay anything until 3 weeks before the wedding.

The only communication the hotel sent out was a letter confirming they had gone into administration.

After this we have heard nothing at all.

I happened to know a few people who know people who work in the hotel and I had heard that our wedding planner had left however we were never told of this and also that the head chef had left. Again we were not communicated with at all so as far as we were aware things weren't looking good for the hotel.

Come April we decided to look at other venues and book else where, which we did. Everything has now been changed over to the other hotel.

However we did not cancel the other hotel, yes we probably should have at the time but the hotel was still in administration and our thoughts were if it does close we can claim out £500 deposit back on our credit card, however if we cancel the wedding and it then closes we could not.

Anyway it is now 3 months to go until the wedding and I figure that its time we cut our loses either way and cancel the wedding at the other hotel however when I call the hotel I am informed the hotel has been bought by another vendor and is no longer in administration.

The person I spoke to said he will get the general manager to call me back tomorrow as he was not in today and that was all he was able to tell me.

I am now worried, having looked back over the T & C's we signed (bearing in mind this was when the hotel was under different ownership) its says that we will have to pay up to 100% of the wedding costs if we cancel with less then 4 months to go. I am now worried they may try to say we have to do this as they are no longer in administration.

Could anyone advise me on this?

Just to clarify, we have had 0 communication from the hotel since the beginning of March when we received the letter to say they had gone into administration. We were informed we would have to pay nothing further whilst they were in administration. We have had 0 meetings with any hotel staff regarding our wedding since January this year.

Thanks for your help.

You had no communication from the hotel about the situation since March - so did you try contacting them about the situation at all in the past 5 months?

If your contract says 100% is due if you cancel within 4 months then, unfortunately, you would have to pay the 100%. You can choose not to pay, but depending on the cost, the hotel could take you to court.
