First tax credits claim

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone could help me.

I put my first claim on as my circumstances changes (partner left) and I'm waiting for it to process.

I've been told two conflicting things re backdating.

First I was told that it's automatically backdated to a month before it is received mine was the 20th July. So I was told it would be backdated and paid from June 20th

Then today, I was told that it isn't automatically backdated and that I need to request it but they will pay it from the date it was received which is 20th July.

I'm really confused! I have 2 little ones and am really struggling so could do with the correct information!
