Trainers in the washing machine? Yes or No?

Hi all
DS has just got a lovely new, expensive pair of trainers. Then he went out kicking a ball about in the mud and they are filthy. They seem to have grass stains on them as well as dried in mud.
They are running style trainers with grey mesh uppers. What's the best way to clean them? I have never dared to put trainers in the washing machine before but I must admit that they are so bad that I am tempted.
Help!

Ha! Thats brilliant, thank you, I am quite tempted to buy him them. Hubby has just said I should give him an old toothbrush and some soapy water and let him get on with it.0 -
Hi. I have washed several pairs of my sons trainers in the washing machine over the years. They have all come out clean and with no damage. This includes fabric types and mixed leather and fabric types. I wash them on short 30 degree cycle and then leave outside to dry. I also put them in with something else such as a towel so they don't bang about in the drum too much0

Another vote for the washing machine!0

Personally I wash trainers by stirring them well in a bucket of hot soapy water, then stick a hosepipe-in and stir them around whilst rinsing. Hang them-up for a couple of days to dry.0

Hi, I wash trainers, canvis shoes and slippers in my machine. Nothing gone wrong yet!The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0

I wash trainers and walking boots in the washing machine all the time. I usually pop them in pairs in a pillow case with a hair bobble around the top and wash them on 30. I also stuff them with paper to dry otherwise I've found they feel tight when I wear them again.
Unless you are planning to do them on a wash hot enough to damage the glue, they will probably be fine.0 -
Personally I'd question why you'd need to put trainers in the washing machine as I NEVER would.
If they....
A) are covered in mud etc a swill around in a bucket of warm water with a mild detergent sorts it out.
They stink... don't wear them all the time, make sure your feet are clean BEFORE wearing them and it goes without saying.... wear clean socks.
Looking at Strava my current running shoes a pair of Asics Gel-Kayano have done 332 miles and still look pretty good considering I'd also have no issue leaving them in a friends hallway from a smell POV.0 -
I actually have a programme on the washing machine for trainers. It works really well. I do put them in a loosely tied old pillowcase as they make a bit of a noise. I dry them on top of the wheelie bin outside and I have had no problems yet....0

Thanks all. I popped them in the machine in an old pillowcase tied up with a hair bobble and washed them on delicates at 30 - no spin - with a bit of silk and wool washing liquid. I also threw one of the dogs blankets in there to stop them banging about.
They came up really well and are now stuffed with newspaper drying out. The way my son is growing at the moment they probably won't fit him in another couple of months time so I suppose I wasnt too bothered about the long term affects of doing this.0
