Is it a good idea for me to install windows 10 on my windows 7 64 bit operating system and 4 gig Ram HP pavilion computer but looking on the internet people are saying windows 10 has problems and you cannot go back to windows 7 once you have selected windows 10.

Found this today from steam forum

Catches:
- Ability to play DVDs is lost.
- Media Centre is lost.
- Conflicting information whether the old Windows 7/8 license becomes invalid after upgrading.
- Conflicting information whether W7/8 full retail licenses inherit their ability to W10 to be transferred to a new PC later (when old PC isn't used any more) or if it will be bound to the device on which you installed W10.
- Supposedly no CD key / product / serial number - which is needed when you want to reinstall W10. So better make a full system backup after upgrading to W10.

There's a fair bit of confusion over the upgrade process. As I understand it, you have to upgrade your current Win7/8 OS so that Microsoft can verify your licence and convert it to a Windows 10 licence.

After you've upgraded and converted your Win7/8 licence into a Win10 one, you can perform a clean upgrade using a DVD image (free download) and your old Win7/8 product key.

    Or so I heard! :-D

Wait a few months, no rush as you have 12 months to upgrade for free. Let all the other [strike]suckers[/strike] users find and get bugs fixed before you jump in.

I think this is nearly correct, but I'm pretty sure Windows 10 won't accept a Win7/8 product key.

My understanding is that once Microsoft have converted your licence to Windows 10, and you have activated Windows 10, they store the details of your hardware in an activation server somewhere. Then when you clean install Windows 10 again on some future date, it phones home to the activation server - if it recognises the hardware, it will activate.

(Don't ask what happens if you change the hardware, especially the motherboard, as that's rather less clear ...)

Check with the manufacturers of your peripherals and programs first that they support W10:

    Printer
    Webcam
    etc

Media centre was poor anyway, use Plex for way more features.
There will be a DVD player app in the next set of updates.
You can rollback any time in the 30 days after upgrading, you will retail the ability to do a full install at any time.

Yeah I tried the Rollback with one of the preview versions and it totally didn't work. Maybe they've improved it, but personally I wouldn't rely on it. I'm certainly making my own backup of Windows 8.1 before I upgrade my main machine.

Strange, I've rolled back three times on this machine without any issues.

Expect possible problems if you upgrade on a virtual machine. Evidently VMWare, Parallels and Virtual Box are all experiencing screen resolution graphics problems (even though it will run). Also, for anyone reliant on Microsoft Money you will find that it won't run at all and asks for Internet Explorer 6 (which was bundled with MS Money). Reinstalling MS Money doesn't help. The same thing happens. IE6 won't install on its own. Apparently there is a Registry hack which will allow the program to run but then downloading bank statement data crashes it. I did upgrade after copying the Win7 VMWare file but binned Win10 and put 7 back as I'm still an enthusiastic MS Money 2005 user. I'll keep an eye on things and maybe have another go if these problems get sorted out in the coming weeks. OS X is my main OS anyway.

But... Retail licences aren't tied to particular hardware. Microsoft have no right to restrict me from installing WIndows 10 on a different machine. :-/
