I got pup a nice lamb bone from the butcher last week, & he's thoroughly enjoying it! But should it be kept in the fridge in between gnashings, & how long should it be kept....I don't want to give him a jip tum.

Once the enzymes in the saliva get in contact with the meat, they start the digestive process. I wouldn't keep it more than 24 hours. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

Dogs evolved to eat 'ripe' meat and will readily eat things like other animals poo, long dead and rancid mice etc with no ill effects. I have 16 dogs and they all get given bones regularly (remember never ever give cooked bones, raw only). Even in hot weather when the bones get a bit stinky after a day outside, the dogs appear to enjoy them and we never seem to have the runs here. My lot get fed a natural diet involving tripe, whole chicken carcasses, raw eggs, raw meat, ox heart, lungs, turkey necks, whole rabbits, (skin, bones, gizzards and all) along with veggies, pasta, rice, cheese, milk and a plain wholemeal terrier biscuit.
As long as he is enjoying it and he isn't getting a runny bum, leave him to it.0 -
Wow:eek: I dare not let my krew see your post Fenwoman--it tokk them 16 years to convince me they could have a dog!
So are you the female equivalent of Cesar Millan? I watch to see if there is anything we can be doing now with a 20 week old english bull/staff male, to prevent having to call in the Home Guard in a couple of years time cos he's destroying the place!Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

If you speak to most vets I think they would say not to give bones to dogs at all. They can break pieces off which can become lodged in their throat and many operations have to be carried out because of this. There are so many meaty treats available from petshops that there is no need to give them real bones. I have 6 dogs and would love to give them a meat bone because they would absolutely adore it but I just darent!!!0

Vets are a bit like Gyne drs, they only see the dog whose eaten a bone when it goes wrong, and Drs only see women in childbirth when it's gone wrong - so they always thing a hospital delivery is the way to go. Dogs have been eating (and safely digesting) bones for thousands, if not millions of years, and I bet most of the 'naughty bones' have been cooked - did you know the ones you get from pet shops are often deep fat fried? Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

I usually let my dog have her bone for a couple of weeks and then chuck it. She won't eat them for a day or two anyway unless I give them to her frozen. If she starts to get the runs before then I will throw it away.0

Beachbeth speaks sense regarding bones!0

If you don't want to spend out on hefty vet bills then i'd advise against giving dogs a bone, but it's your dog and your choice.0

If you get those great big roast knuckle bones there is not much can splinter off , the dogs have to gnaw them, its the finer bones that splinter.0
