I thought that my computer would update to Windows 10 by notifying me that it was available to update.
It does have the Windows 10 icon.
Or does it not work that way?
Should I download the iso file instead and do a clean install using my windows 8.1 key?

You could still download the ISO, and perform an upgrade install with the ISO, then once Windows 10 has activated, then you could clean install.
Whatever you do, I'd always take a backup image of the disk first so you can revert and try again from a valid activated copy of windows 8.1 if something went wrong.0 -
Check in your update history to see if it has tried to update. Mine had tried several times and failed.
If it has failed, the instructions on the link below worked for me...

I got a failure to update aswell, the install Windows Update files failed.
The easy way to manually install, go to...
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Scroll down to to 32 bit or 64 bit (whichever applies) Download Tools, and install, and run.
Two options appear, choose the top one (upgrade) and that's it, the upgrade will install.
Remember to backup anything on your C: drive first!0 -
It might be worth waiting six months or so. By that time Microsoft may have fixed the problems which some people are having with the upgrades.
People have a whole year to make the free upgrade from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, remember!0 -
Update started Wednesday this week .
First check your programs and drivers are compatible .
Stuff like printers may have no drivers yet .0 -
I got the popup tonight saying the update is available, and I notice a new folder on my C drive ... $Windows.~BT0

So from their point of view it's not a problem if the OP hasn't received the upgrade yet, and there's nothing to fix; it's all part of the plan.
Having said that I agree that for most people there's no hurry to upgrade just yet.0
