It really depends how much your car is worth. If it's worth more than £10k I would use a premium fuel. If it's worth less than £1k I would use the cheapest fuel available. Anywhere in between make your own mind up.

As an experiment, I started to use 'Fuelly.com' to log my fuel usage and was shocked to find that the car I had at the time, a 1997 Astra 1.6 Tdi, dropped 5mpg when using supermarket diesel.

Had the same with a '05 plate Zafira and now with my '08 Berlingo 1.6HDi (90 bhp).
A freind purchsaed a 2004 Picasso with the 72 bhp 1.6 TDi engine and the previous owner had run it exclusively on supermarket diesel. It was really sluggish and had little go in it. A year running it on branded fuel and it is like a new car. It actually has the sort of performance you would expect for this sort of vehicle.

I also ran a Skoda Octavia (1999) with the VW 1.9TDi engine and this was an odd one out as it returned the same mpg regardless of where the diesel came from.
My conclusions are that it must be down to the sensitivity of the various sensors fitted to a car's engine and how the ECU uses their readings to adjust fuel delivery.

This very day i have returned from a 431 mile round trip on my 1.8 petrol civic. I filled up at tesco for 112p per litre and having covered the 431 mile trip the fuel computer was showing an average mpg of 50.4mpg. Most of the journey was motorway. The tank holds about 46 litres and the remaining range was about 85 miles. I am quite happy using supermarket petrol and see not reason to use any other. It is all manufactured to the same British standard.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I have had conversations with three mechanics recently and they have all advised me not to buy Supermarket petrol. They have all said that Branded petrol gives you a better performance and that it keeps your engine cleaner as well. Have any of you experienced any differences?
why have you had conversations with 3 mechanics?
