Door and window security questions

Options
bit different from the usual - i need to keep people in not out!

2 of my kids are autistic and my toddler is an escape artist and getting worse. I havn't been able to have windows open in the house for the last 2 years! I used to have the door chain on all the time but now he has leant to climb the door (yes climb the door!!) and take the chain off!!
i am petrified that he is going to escape. I don't like the idea of locking the door and putting the key up (during the day) as i'm worried that he will try and get it

we have pvc windows in the bedrooms does anyone know how we can lock the window open in such a way he cannot escape. I did have it locked on slightly opened but woke up yesterday with his bedroom window wide open and him dressed as spiderman

I also need some advice on fencing for the garden as yep you guessed it he can climb those as well, I feel like i live in a prison
Proud to be sorting my life out!

There are loads of products available that will do this, with varying degrees of security/safety. Lots of them can be retro-fitted. You need to speak to an architectural ironmonger. Look in your Yellow Pages or on yell.co.uk. If you can't find one, contact a joinery manufacturer and ask them who they use. I can recommend a good one in Coventry.

Why not seek advice from the Autism Society? I'm sure other parents have been faced with your difficulties. HTH

If your toddler can unlock a uPVC window without the key then I think you need to seriously think about replacing the locks or putting additional ones on.

How old are the windows...if they're newish you might have cause for a complaint?

I don't know if it would be any good but I have seen cages that can be used in windows that tilt. They lock into place so the air can get in but pets can't get out. I can't remember where I saw them, one of the big pet websites I think.
Speaking to the Autism society is a good idea, they may be able to put you in touch with local people who can help.
