i upgraded from sky broadband unlimited where i was consistently getting 10mb download speeds to fibre unlimited on tuesday of this week (28th). i already had the black sky hub. i am only getting an average of 20mb downloads. i called CS and they got me to power off and back on again my router last night that temporarily got the speed to 30mb, but this morning its back down to 20mb?
i am around 1km from the exchange.
is this something that can increase after the initial 10 day monitoring period that someone has told me about or is there something else i can do to improve things as i can't really see any difference in my internet surfing performance at present.
i have posted my stats below from the sky stats page for my router which sky shows a download of 39mb? but evey other test i have done on speedtest.net or similar has come back at 20mb taken at the same time.
many thanks:
Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 39998 kbps 9999 kbps
Line Attenuation 18.3 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 17.3 dB 11.11 dB

couple of things...
1. your stats DON'T show a download speed, they show the connection speed, there are still data overheads on VDSL as there are on ADSL.
2. you are probably using wifi to connect your device, if you used an ethernet cable from router to device, you'd normally see 30-ish Mb speeds. Wifi will never transfer data as well as a cable
3. your stats are almost identical to mine, nothiing wrong there except a reporting error on your upstream attenuation (0.0dB)
If your router and device are capable of using the 5GHz wifi band, this may give slightly better speedtest results on wifi - I set my pc up with a 5GHz usb wifi adapter and the router with 2.4 and 5GHz SSIDs, and let the kids use the 2.4 and keep the 5GHz for me & Mrs G-J
edit:- it's not distance from the exchange that matters on fibre, but distance to the DSLAM PCP, ie the street cabinet you are connected to...on your attenuation you're around 600 metres from yours.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

thanks for your answer.
i will try an ethernet cable to test out the speed but as we only use wifi to connect our devices, obviously this is the most important feature for me. i would have hoped to of achieved a consistent 30mb download though?0 -

wifi is NOT internet, it's just the method of connecting your devices to your router, and is a natural data "bottleneck"... try a pc/laptop connected via cable to your router, you'll probably see 35meg plus on a speedtest...
plus, use a reputable speedtest site like this:-

hi gunkack
thanks for reply.
just tried on ethernet cable and yes i did get to 35mb but i need to connect via wifi under normal circumstances.
it's just the fact that on wifi 1 minute it registers as 18mb then a few minutes later its at 30mb, so i think my line / location is capable of this faster speed so would just like to maintain it?0 -

you are still misunderstanding the difference between your line speed (internet connection) and your local (i.e. within your house between your router and your devices) data transfer speed....
Your line/internet speed IS performing as expected....
Your current wifi IS performing as expected...
I did give you the probable only solution to increase your wifi data transfer speed, i.e use a router and devices which use the 5GHz wifi band rather than the normal 2.4GHz band..

Your wifi speed is not any concern of your ISP, it's down to various factors within the property, primarily distance and wall construction-solid masonry walls will degrade the signal far more than stud walls made of plasterboard, for example. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
