  • Thanks again for the help (And the debate!) Just how much does it cost to have a DBS check done yourself? And are there any places online where you can get one sorted?

You don't need to do another. It is transferable so that any employer can access it.

It is not like the old days of CRB when every organisation arranged their own checks.

    tns.

That's the theory. I have had to do a new check for every organisation I have worked or volunteered for, despite registering them all.

    I have 5 or 6 currently.

That was the previous system, that they were NOT portable / transferrable. The theory of the new one is that the individual applies for the check, and any other employer / voluntary organisation who is entitled to check you can then see the results. How recently did you apply for your last one?

Of course, not every organisation will want to register to check for updates, but we find it's much simpler.

DBS may, in theory, be portable, but in reality it isn't.
I spent 14 weeks working in a care home and needed an Enhanced DBS check.
Now, my Enhanced DBS for my Scouting role is due for renewal and I pointed-out that I am registered on the DBS update service.
'No dice' say the Scout Association. 'You need to do one with us as the one you have covers vulnerable adults and not children'. Strangely, the same checks are done and the same info logged regardless.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

  • I'm Back! Thanks for the link to the £25 DBS check. Does it matter that it's with an organisation that's based in Scotland? (I know, daft question, I just want to check......)

    :)

Ah, now that is a good point: there are separate tick boxes on the application to indicate whether it's for vulnerable adults or children, and I think there are separate 'banned lists' for each. I didn't realise that making an application for one rather than the other would mean making a separate application if you then needed both ...

Thinking about I have applied twice along the way, once with the Youth Offending Service, and once for support charity for adults coming out of prison - didn't realise there are check boxes for different categories.

Gotta laugh at the DBS system. It looks like they should DBS the clients to protect the support workers.
