Do you get sound from a headset/headphones ? Which laptop which operating system, what are you losing sound on ? Give us all a clue

Check Sound Mixer (Speaker Icon in the bottom right corner for W7).

What make of laptop do you have?

My Lenovo loses sound randomly and I find switching it off and restarting often solves the problem.

But it is a pain in the @rse and happens for no apparent reason.:(

After googling the problem months ago, I discovered it isn't that uncommon with the laptop I have!

Did you try headphones, have you checked that it's not default switched output to headphones or some other device such as HDMI audio ?

Check playback devices.
