Daughter eligible for JSA / UC?

Hi,
My daughter is 18 and is currently awaiting her A level results.

She doesn't want to go to Uni, and is currently looking for an apprenticeship. She has a part time job in a retail store, working a contract of 4 hours pw, usually with up to 8 extra hours available. She was happy to continue with this until she finds something full time, such as a suitable apprenticeship.

However, she - along with others - have now been told that overtime, in the form of any additional hours will not be available for the forseeable future. The income she gets from 4 hours pw will not be enough for her to get along on.

Is she eligible to claim JSA / UC whilst still working the 4 hours pw? Her contract states 4 hours, its not a flexible hours one.

Would any income from that reduce what she would get from JSA / UC?

Any help gratefully received, many thanks

As long as she is working less than 16 hrs a week then she can claim JSA/UC.

Any income received will reduce her JSA money with a £5 disregard so they will deduct all her earnings minus £5.

She will be expected to sign a Job Seekers agreement (claimant commitment for UC) and fulfil all the requirements regarding job seeking etc.

Are you not still claiming Child Benefit for your daughter or has it already ceased?

I would think very carefully before making a claim to benefits, its a very uncomfortable process and as an 18 year old they will be very "productive" in giving her assistance.....

  • We will get Child Benefit until September.

We would like to avoid her having to make a claim for JSA / UC if at all possible, but just wanting to check the availability in case it does become a neccessity.
