VW Golf - vibrating noise

I have an 02 reg Golf. It's great in all ways but one. The dash rattles. At the back - near the vent which blows on to the windscreen. Sounds like a leaf or a loose fan. It isn't a leaf though. It's intermittent but is getting worse. If I rest something heavyish or wedge something under the windscreen it stops, similarly if I push on the dash, where the 'face; vents are, it ceases, until I stop pushing. Any ideas how to fix it? Is it a DIY job or a garage job?

No. It's all very solid feeling.

It will probably prove not economically viable to get a garage to fix this on such and old car.

If you have some off cuts of foam you could try and push that under the leading edge of the dash to see if that helps.

Many rattles are caused by the anti rattle foam wearing out. Especially with cables etc inside doors or behind panels.

I've had a quick google and it seen some possible DIY solutions so I'll have a go at some of those and see if they help. It's got so bad that OH refuses to get in the car, and his moaning has made it annoy me too!

Velcro something heavy to the dash? Your OH perhaps?

Most likely the dashboard was remove to do a repair, Perhapsaheater matrix fix or sometimes rewired to integrated updated dabs/integrated gps mounts or something.

The dashboard isn't screwed in place at all points. To make manufacturing quicker and simpler they have these anchored tabs that push in and hold the plastic part stuck in place. But if the assembly is removed the tabs can bend or break rendering them useless.

It's an old car, you'll have dozens of small niggles like that. Just live with it unless the noise is so annoying that it distracts you when you're driving.
