Painting plastics is all in the primer. I recommend Dulux super grip, be sure to rub down the plastic first with a fine sandpaper, then undercoat and top coat with decent quality paint.What goes around - comes around

If you're painting it cos its discouloured, you may be able to get a replacement casing, no matter how old it is.
We had one that had discoloured (or was originally cream-coloured) in our bathroom that I suspect was at least 30 years old and I managed to get a replacement by typing the product code from inside the fan into google.0
