Autumn holiday - wheelchair disabled

I'd like to go on my hols this autumn, but am newly in a wheelchair. I've had a look at some of the other post suggestions and gone to travel agents, but am either horrified by the price (£3000 for a fortnight's cruise for my OH and me), or not really keen on the breeze-block-in-Benidorm packages.
I know that packing my collapsible wheelchair is not a problem for flights, but I'm worried about my OH's back. He's in pain after a couple of hours of pushing me around, let alone for a fortnight. The problem is: we're culture vultures, so we really do want to get out and explore.
ANy ideas or advice gratefully received.
