Airline and Travel industry staff can still fly using standby, but very often get bumped onto much later flights, or a couple can be split up and fly out a few days apart, so not ideal.

I once was bored a home on a Saturday morning so booked a flight online for a few quid, threw some clothes into a bag, drove straight to the airport and a few hours later I was sat on the beach in the south of France. Found a cheap B&B for the night then flew back the next day.
