    Cheap cuts that I like......
Shoulder of lamb (tastier than leg IMP)
    Shoulder of pork
    Ribs (yum)
    Oxtail
    Brisket
Ham hock (good for pea and ham soup)
    Beef skirt
    Feather steak
    Chicken thighs
    Pork belly
    Pawpurrs x ;)
  • See shoulders appeared twice... that's a front half thing. Just looking through some recipie books for what to do with them.

Already a huge fan of chicken thighs, stock piles in the freezer... we have them a couple of times a week in different ways.

Thanks for your suggestions. Now I know what to ask for and will look knowledgable instead of cheap when I'm at the butchers!

    Hi milkybars,

There's a recent thread with lots of advice on which cheaper cuts of meats to buy that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

On Jamie Oliver's show about the British Pork Industry recently he demonstrated frying pork neck fillet steaks which are cheaper than loin chops and just as nice. You can also use these in stews or Sweet and sour pork or curry. He also mentioned buying a pork shoulder joint ( you can get them boned and rolled) instead of a leg joint. Apparently in this country we export the cheaper cuts of pork and import the expensive stuff like loin chops - how crazy is that?

I've got some feather steak. I've never cooked it before. It looks to me as if it would be best slow-cooked because of the marbling of fat. But google tells me it can be grilled like prime steak. Any recommendations?

    Sorry just seen this TL,
It can be cooked just like a normal steak, but wont be as tender as fillet, feather steak is what the french normally have if you are having a cheapish steak au frites, and is nice done like this.
Or due to the fat marbeling is tasty slow cooked in stews etc as well, It wont go tough. HTH

Thanks Pawpurrs :T I think I'll go the steak frites route (with hm oven frites) we don't often have that but we do have a lot of slow-cooked meat so it'll be a nice change.
  • I've seen Rick Stein do a grilled feather steak on tele so you might find something on the bbc or ukfood web sites.

Yum, it will be especially nice with some flavoured butter on the top, parsley and garlic?

    Hi,
I am sorry if this is a stupid question. I have bought my meat off the shelf in supermarkets up to now and tend to stick to the same old things (mince, chops, etc). I recently got a gift of a slow cooker and have found a good local butcher but I'm not sure what cuts to ask him for? Is it, say, stewing beef, etc or are there other good value bits that he can give me and I can put in the SC?
