What to do with a prize I can't take?

Hi,

I won a trip to Rome, but the dates are restrictive and it looks as though I will not be able to go because of this. Should I tell the promotions company running the prize or should I try to give it to someone? It also includes travel, spending money and a couple of other things. (I know it can't be offered on here, so I am not).

Thanks

Ask if it is tranferable to someone else.

If not you'll just have to move on & let them allocate it someone else.

Just my view & sorry if it is not the best news.

    Congrats on the win though.
  • Thanks Weeowens,

Do you think I could accept it and not use the flights or hotel, but bank the spending money?
p.s thanks for all the comps you post, you are a star!

Hi, some may see it as unethical but it is your prize so play it as you wish.

    You won it :-)

Just check the terms to ensure that you do not have to participate in all parts of the prize to get the cash.

    Just my thoughts :-)

Is the cash a good figure, if that is Ok to ask ?
  • Hi Weeowens,

It is £100, maybe not a huge amount but I wouldn't say no! :)
  • In the last three months I have won, 5 prizes and three of them I couldn't accept ( my work commitments mean I cannot take time off at all, except during specified periods). One was a meal for two in a london restaurant, that I really wanted, but could not make it, due to work and they couldn't/wouldn't change the time or date or let me pass it on to someone else.

As it's only £100 I think I'd ask them to redraw the prize and hope by doing so and giving someone else the chance of a holiday rather than letting it go to waste that it'd be good karma for a future fabulous win.
(and alternately not anger the comping gods so I never won anything but mousemats in the future ;) )

Congratulations on the win - this does happen sometimes and the outcome may depend on how you react to it!

I would say you should always be honest with the promoter - in similar circumstances I was offered an alternative stay date largely because I had not just accepted and then not gone. Equally, I have ceded a prize because the inexperienced promoters never dreamed that anyone outside the local area would win. Swings and roundabouts!

And remember, if the promoter says "No" it is their competition so you need to take it in good grace.
    Still cracking on....

  • Very difficult to transfer a prize like this I've tried, I couldn't even to my parents, best to ask them to redraw. I don't enter comps like this any more because they can be very problematic.

Always worth a chance to ask for a transfer. I won one of the Pepsi comps last years to see Beyonce in Milan but it clashed with a booked trip to Bournemouth I already had. I'm sure it said non-transferable but I asked and was able to pass it on to my sister.
    Thank you all who post.

I won a theatre trip with Real People last winter. I never enter for theatre trips as I don't enjoy them. I was gutted that I was selected for something I didn't want & not one of the ones I had entered for.

I rang Real People to say I hadn't entered & to see if I could transfer it. I was told I must have entered!!!! & it was non transferrable (redrawn)

Not at all impressed with the handling but will keep trying
