Wftc/ctc

hello can someone out there help me please,
We (my wife and I) have Equita pursuing us for overpayment of WFTC/CTC from 2004-2006. Is this a debt that HMRC could write-off? We've written to HMRC on a few occasions stating that WFTC/CTC was paid to us in a time of need and just because we earned a little better in the following years don't see that it's fair that we have to repay money that basically we just haven't got.
We'd be grateful for any advice.
Regards
