Astra boot problem

I have an 1.6 Atra sxi. Yesterday my boot suddenly stopped working. the washers still work so I don't think its a fuse issue.

I had the same issue couple years back, that time I simple opened the boot from the inside, opened it up, and cleaned the crap that had built up - worked fine.

this time is different, the button still seems to click when I press it in - just nothing happens.

I also can not open it up from the inside, I put the screwdriver inside, but it doesn't turn to open. seems as though that's jammed up.

anyone out there had similar experience?

Any ideas on a fix?

Thanks - Callum.

Is it a motorised locking mechanism (actually a solenoid, but sounds like a whirring motor)?

Not sure why the washers would have anything to do with the lock, totally unrelated circuits.

I had the opposite problem with my focus a while back that it kept opening and I had to get the switch replaced due to water getting in and activating it all the time.

You may just need a new switch but you will have to get the boot lid open first.

Had this on an astra hatchback, not the easiest job i have ever done...like yours worked one day then failed and unable to use the emergency release as the plastic cog had given up the ghost. obviously the latch had expired.
First thing to do is get a new lock mech, or a used one from the scrapyard or fleabay.

To replace the locking mechanism the tailgate needs to be open as its screws are at the bottom and inaccessable when its shut...but you can not open it!!!

I spent a very uncomfortable half hour wedged in the boot via the rear seats.. the hatchback card had to be "persuaded" off to gain access.

once inside the plastic case on the lock mech can be removed with a little effort (i think it was a couple of catches) and then you can manually trip the latch to open the tailgate, then its easy going to replace.
At times any combination of my spelling, grammar or punctuation may be incorrect. Please do not pick me up for this as, after all, it is only an internet forum.

There's a fuse in the engine bay fusebox that does both the tailgate lock and the windscreen washer pump. I had a few come in over the winter with that problem and they were all that fuse.

Think the handbook says it's fuse 8 but out of the ones I had only 2 were where the book claimed they were, the others I had to just check each one individually.
