Housing Benefit

How is Housing Benefit worked out.
I only have £430pcm (private pension and WTC) yet I have to pay £130pcm towards my rent. To me this seems excessive. The council say its right but to me its a hell of a lot. Onto of this I have to pay £10pcm towards my Council Tax.
I'm just starting self employed and not earning anything at the moment. I cant claim JSA as my private pension just knocks me out.
Any advice?

Is your property rented privately or is it social housing?0

Each person is given what is called an applicable amount.
The applicable amount is the amount you need for basic living expenses.
Your applicable amount is probably £73.10.
The first £73.10 per week of your income is disregarded.
A further £10 of your income is disregarded because you work.
For every £1 income above this you lose 65p per week Housing Benefit.
You ae probably losing about £10.50 for your private pension and a further £19.50 because of your Tax credits which I am assuming is about £30 per week? These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.0 -
Is the wtc paid for your self employment.
Are you single & how are you?0
