Can a bank statement be used for a full refund of a non faulty item?

I made a purchase which was a gift for my mum, as this was the case I asked for a gift receipt. I can't locate my original receipt but I got a transaction statement from my bank showing the purchase clearly. I've tried returning the item with the bank statement but the retailer is saying they will only exchange as that's what it says on the gift receipt. Where do I stand? I've read through your consumer rights details but I can't see that it covers this particular scenario.
