Question re taxing my car

Hello. Hope someone can advise me. :)

I went to put 12 months tax on my car this morning, (it's due 1st August, but you can put it on a few days early of course...)

So I gave the woman all the documents, and paid the money, and she did what she needed to do to process the request, and then gave me a receipt for the money. No tax disc as it's been phased out of course.

This was at 11.30am.

Now 3 hours later, I have looked online at my car details on the DVLA, and it showed me MOT'd until next May (which is correct,) but it says my tax is due on 1st August 2015.

I am a bit worried now because the new tax is not showing.

It is taxed until August 2016 now (as I did it this morning,) so why does it say only taxed until August 2015? :(

Will it just update on 1st August?

Thanks

i would say relax, its only been three hours.

Keep an eye over the next few days to see if it updates, and keep hold of your receipt just in case.

Did you do this at the post office?

I have no idea how the system works, but it may not be "real time", data files may not be sent to Swansea until close of business, updates may be done at midnight etc. I know in this world of everything being online and available, we expect instant updates, but sometimes things don't (or cant) happen that quickly.

PS Have just checked my own tax on the gov.uk website and it states, right below the tax dates, "If you have taxed, made a SORN or had a MOT it can take up to 5 days for these details to be shown above".

"If you have taxed, made a SORN or had a MOT it can take up to 5 days for these details to be shown above." - This is the notice shown when you do the check on the website.

Oh thank you folks. So I am panicking for nothing then. :rotfl:

I didn't realise that it took 5 working days, and assumed it went on immediately (like a bank transaction would.)

It's so weird - paying for the tax and not getting that tangible piece of evidence that you have it.

I shall definitely keep hold of the receipt. I paid cash! So if I lost it, I wouldn't have proof I have paid.

AND I would get rollicked by the bizzies for having no tax!

    Thanks again :j

    If you go here Petra

    https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

And enter your details (not sure if this is where you went before :o ) then you will see it says

"If you have taxed, made a SORN or had a MOT it can take up to 5 days for these details to be shown above."

When I had the car MOTd the other month, it took a week to the day for it to show.

Do keep your receipt safe, (maybe staple it to the SORN reminder you received) and keep it in your car. But you are taxed til Saturday under the old tax anyway.

As long as you have your receipt which should say '12 months TAX bought on 28th July, XXX paid' and so on, you're covered.

Don't worry, it'll be fine. :) Just check it say Friday, and if nothing by then, check next Monday/Tuesday. I would definitely give it a week from today before worrying about it.

I SORN'd a vehicle and got the tax refund before my new vehicle was showing as taxed.

Thanks so much everyone! And fierystormcloud, thanks for that link; that was the one I had already looked at, but that's very kind of you. :)

I checked all day yesterday and nothing had changed, even by 7pm, then I checked just now (5 minutes ago,) and it's now updated! :j The tax is now due August 2016.

I was worried as I had never done it before like this, and was genuinely worried that it hadn't worked. :o

Thanks for all your reassurance folks. :)

Thanks for coming back to tell us when it went through.

If I understand your posts that was under 48 hours - which is not bad for a gov.uk computer programme/service.

Yes I think it was around 48 hours actually Iceweasel. I did it around half ten on Tuesday morning.

    Not bad. :)

As I said, I am glad it has updated, because I was a bit concerned as I hadn't done it this way before.

    All sorted now though. :)

(ETA. I have just noticed that the timing on here is off a bit. I posted first this morning at 10.01am, and it's showing up as 9.01am. Same with my later posts (and other peoples too.) They are also an hour behind. I posted this one at 10.50am and it's showing as 9.50am.)

Strange. This only usually happens when the clocks have gone forward.)
