BS still sending statements

In 7 weeks time it will be the 10th anniversary of my OH's death. Today I received the usual annual savings account statement for him. It has £1.41 in it.

Over the years I have rung them, written to them, passed their statements over to the solicitor who dealt with the probate, sent them a copy of the Death Certificate. But the statements keep on coming. They seem to be unstoppable.

Does anyone have any idea as to how I get through to these people that he is dead, deceased, not coming back. I still find it very upsetting to see post addressed to him and whilst I can understand junk mail I can't get around the sheer incompetence of sending statements to a dead man for 10 years.

  • Formal complaint letter, threatening to go to the Financial Ombudsman Service if it is not sorted to your satisfaction.

Should do the trick. They may well require the documentation again (death certificate, grant of representation/administration, etc), but make it clear to them that you will be doing it at their expense (plus hefty consideration for the added distress and inconvenience that this is causing you).

Why was the account not closed as part of the probate?

MAke one final attempt. Ask them what they require in order to close the account of a deceased person. Send them the stuff they ask for (even if you have already sent it on previous occasions) Keep photocopies of everything you send, and proof of postage.

If they do not then close the account then make a formal complaint, in writing.

If you have already done gone through the account closing process, then write a letter of complaint, Set out whet you have done and why (e.g. completed account closing firm and sent it to branch together with copy death certificate, as I was told to do by staff at the branch"), and when you did it)

Keep it as factual as possible and save the comments about how distressing it is to a single paragraph at the end.

State clearly what you want them to do (e.g. close the account, send the balance to me as a cheque payable to xxxx)

Ask them to write to confirm that the letter has been received and to tell you how quickly the process will be completed.

Keep a copy of the letter and proof of postage and follow up if you don't get a response.

If that does not work, wrote to the ombudsman.
