American inheritance question

My American grandmother died recently and left me and my sister $17000 each. The money is in dollars and my other American relatives think it's best to save/invest the money in America for now, rather than convert it to pounds, due to the bad exchange rate. I agree with this but I don't know anything about American investments and I would like some say in where the money is going to go or at least have some knowledge. Does anyone have any advice/know a direction in which to point me?
What did I do at work before I discovered MSE?!

DFD - WAS: a while ago

NOW - not sure, due to boyfriend going back to uni for masters and now pgce. Worth it in the long run!
Proud to be dealing with my debts!
