Can't get wi fi on my iPad ?

I'm away from home at the moment and can't seem to get my iPad to connect to wifi. Im in Europe if that makes any difference. Is there some setting I need to adjust? I do t usually use this outside of my home.

should connect automatically if its an open if not get the password , i have never had trouble using mine all over the world will connect in seconds with a password or sometimes need to sign into a site for access
am using Ipad 1st gen

I've tried in two cafes. The first one was pay and be given the passwords -didn't work-the second was just select the cafe name no password needed-neither worked

Try turning off the wifi then rebooting the iPad. Turn wifi back on when in range then in 'Settings' see what's available. The reboot often sorts them out.

"Neither worked" is very vague. What did you actually observe on the screen? An error message? What was the exact wording?
