Cost of moving gas meter?

We have a gas meter in the dining room but it's on an external wall and want to put the meter on the outside of the house.
A plumber came and showed me the gas pipe which come up exposed from a flowerbed to about 8 inches high before going at a right angle straight through the wall to where the meter is on the other side. He plumber said it would be a very easy job as the pipes just need cutting off before they go through the wall and the meter placing there.
Obviously it can only be done by National Grid so I filled in their online request and it has come back with a guide price of £1500! I will get the official call to discuss the quote and a give a final price, but is this likely to be lower than the guide price? I can't believe it was so high!

They can really charge what they like and it's up to you whether you accept or reject it.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0

They do have different prices according to how far the meter is moved. Other side of the wall I would expect to be half that quoted price.Thats ridiculous, its bad enough at £500 to £800..£1500 is profiteering by a monopoly.. I ve met people who gone and done the move themselves when presented with prices like thatdandy-candy wrote: »We have a gas meter in the dining room but it's on an external wall and want to put the meter on the outside of the house.

alternatively
you are paying for someone who has had the appropriate training and holds the correct authorisation for doing the work. Must admit I have no idea what moving the meter involves though.0 -
Is the incoming pipe Steel? If so,it cannot be adapted and must be renewed in full back to the main. This involves digging in the public highway which is an expensive and highly regulated business.
Maybe the existing meter position could just be tidied up a little to make it less intrusive and be fitted in a suitably sized cupboard with sufficient access as required?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
