British Gas ....... Grrrrrrrr

Hi All,
Hope you can help this newbie as I don't know where to go from here.
Have been with British Gas since moving house 4 years ago with no problems.
Monthly debit was £45 per month till they recently dropped price when it dropped to £38. Decided to see if could save even more using a comparison site. British gas came out cheapest saving me another 12%. Great I thought!
When the payment details arrived the direct debit was for £55! £17 MORE a month than I was previously paying...... sheesh  So got on the phone to BG to enquire why but got nowhere so asked if I could cancel new tariff which doesnt start for another 3 weeks and was then informed that the tariff HADN'T been changed but was the same as for the last 4 years! When I asked why it hadn't then stayed the same cost as previously was told they didnt know...... after going round in circles and getting more and more frustrated I hung up after another 15 minutes.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed from here?

Thanks in advance Layny

I imagine that because you have gone through a comparison site, they have treated you as a new customer and assessed your likely usage in the same way as for other people, which doesn't take into account the fact that you seem to be a lower than average user. Monthly charges are after all only an estimate of usage rather than a monthly bill. I'm not sure how you get it changed.

I forwarded my message to martin.sheehan@centrica.com who is the official BG representative on this site and got a reply within 10 minutes. After a couple of e-mails for further information he has reduced my direct debit on both my gas (£40.... thats with a safety blanket)) and electric bills! Needless to say I am delighted :T
I do agree with your assessment saxmund that they must have regarded me as a new customer......... will keep you updated on whether I get my £30 changed user gift :rotfl:
