Kitchen 'hot rods' - user reviews please

We bought some stick-on hotrods for our kitchen, with a view to replacing the Ikea 50x28cm freestanding trivet; we now have doubts about whether they are such a good idea for us.

Seems to me the hotrods we've got won't really protect the worktop properly since they are metal right on to the surface. The Ikea trivets are open and have plastic feet between them and the worktop.

Just be interested to hear from people who have used the stick-on hotrods:
  • How easy were they to align?
  • Does the adhesive allow you time for (the inevitable!) minor adjustment?
  • Has there been any sign of heat damage to worktops since they were fitted?
Any other comments, observations, etc, welcomed :)
