Declaring home alterations to insurer

I'm renewing buildings and contents insurance and wanted to get a quote from the existing insurer. They asked if there were any changes to the building over the last 12 months, so I said yes we've removed an internal wall, professional builder, and building warrant approved and received.
They said they won't give a quote unless we provide the builders' details, insurer and policy number, and their public liability insurance. If I ask for a quote from a new insurer they don't seem bothered about any of this.
Is it usual to ask for this stuff? If so they've lost a sale because I'm not going back to the builder to get their details, and quotes from other insurers are about the same price anyway.

Its possible that you should've informed them when it was carried out - what does your policy say? Bit pointless asking after the event other than to confirm it was carried out correctly which the building warrant would do.
I checked the actual policy and it just said that the insurance excluded claims for damage caused by any alterations, with no requirement to inform them of any alterations, so I guess they've lost a sale.0
