slow solicitors

Hoping for some advice...


We offered on a property at the beginning of June, which was accepted. Then went on honeymoon for 3 weeks, and came back to find out that our sellers solicitors hadn't even sent draft contracts or any paperwork to our solicitors...


I had to keep chasing for 2 weeks until they finally managed to send the paperwork, which was received about 10 days ago. My solicitors then raised enquiries, which were sent over a week ago. But I had a call today to say that they weren't received.


We've been given a deadline from our buyers of 20th august to complete and getting worried that this wont happen due to our vendors using unreliable solicitors.


Is there anything we can do to influence this situation? Should our solicitors be chasing for us?

Why aren't your solicitors chasing too? This is what you are paying them for. I know it's frustrating as I'm chasing my solicitor for a similar thing but I figured that that's their job.

We've spoken with the estate agents, who I keep chasing. The response I normally get is 'they aren't available to talk now, I'll try again tomorrow'. I'll then wait, and end up having to chase the agents again as they haven't done it. Its frustrating because all of these parties involved seem to get paid a lot of money for doing a pretty poor job. If I provided the same service in my job, then there would be explaining to do.

Tell the vendeors and explain that their solicitor is making it impossible to meet their deadline.

When you viewed, did you meet them? Wee they friendly? Do another viewing and have a chat.

Or write to them, though keeping relations friendly helps.....

thanks. Yes I went round to see the vendor, explained to her that her solicitors were holding things up again, so I'm hoping she will chase them. Just getting worried as we've been given a deadline of 20th august to complete by our buyers as they will be homeless after this date...

Perfectly understandable to be worried about this apparent deadline.

Do you know why your buyers will be homeless? Have they jumped the gun and given notice on a rented property without waiting for exchange of contracts? Have they said that they will definitely withdraw if completion doesn't happen in time - they'll still be homeless and will still need to make alternative plans for either interim or permanent residence.

When someone who has given early notice on a tenancy posts on here with a similar dilemma, they are advised to consider putting stuff into storage and getting a short term holiday let or B&B if the completion date is reasonably only a week or so away.

Your buyers are unlikely to want to withdraw unless they really have to.
