Hi my hard drive has finally packed up and I have been looking on Amazon and Ebuyer for a replacement.
I am now confused between a SATA II and SATA III.
The hard drive I'm replacing is a toshiba hdd2l03 UL01S.
I have no idea what it means and what I should get.
any advice would be fantastic
thanks in advannce

Have you considered a SSD ?
SATA III is backwards compatible with SATA II and SATA I so it doesn't matter.
NB there is a bug in earlier AMD chipsets where auto selection of SATA didn't work and required a drive with manual jumper settings.
What make and model of PC is it ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

Thank you for the quick response. I think I understand what backward compatable means.....
I have a Toshiba Satelite L775 18F
I have thought of an ssd but I'm not sure if the laptop is completely broken. I have had quite a bit of trouble with it and the laptop might need replacing altogether.
I thought that if I bought a cheapish hard drive then I wouldn't be wasting too much money.
I have even asked on freecycle for a used hard drive to see if it will work and if so would be worth getting an ssd.

No harm in buying a SSD which can always be used in another machine and the HDD out of that machine can be used as a backup drive with a caddy. I'd never go back to a HDD now as there are so slow and less reliable.
What sort of trouble have you had, it could be that the HDD has been failing which may be the source of your previous trouble. What makes you think the HDD is currently at fault ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

The hard drive has completely died now.
I keep getting an error message to say that the hard drive is faulty.
I'm now getting a constant loop
