Information at the 'point of sale' (eg, a till or online checkout) would definitely be useful. I recently found out that instead of buying 200 cigarettes every fortnight, as I have been doing for years, I have been buying only 190 for several months!. This is because the manufacturers have reduced the contents to 19 per packet, but the pack stayed the same. I'm especially annoyed because I always asked for 200 (not 5 packets) and so I think that that was mis-selling. Not the fault of the sales assistants, they wouldn't have known because the packs didn't change. But they should have been informed so that they could inform us - i.e. when I asked for 200 they would have been able to tell me that they could only give me 190. I know that this practice is common with other products, but at least with those there are labels giving the weight, or it's obvious that the pack size is smaller. I've been communicating with Sainsbury's about this, but their only response is 'Thank you for telling us.' At the end of the day this is about the low level of staff training.

I am not sure how the proposed signage will help with your problem.

I support this signage at tills and online. Ideally it should be also on receipts, on the back if feasible.
I agree the main thing is to inform staff as well as customers. It would also be helpful to give examples of what sort of product CAN be reasonably expected to last for 6 years, as well as what can't. I found myself arguing with John Lewis over whether a 3 year-old Apple Mac costing £995 could be expected to last that long. They wanted to charge £500 to replace the motherboard.
