car tax exempt and sharing car car

Options
My wheelchair van is tax exempt, my daughter and I share it, me driving . The exemption is in my name, however my daughter who is also eligible for same would like to use the van independently .How can we do this without breaking any rules? (you cannot tax a van twice) In essence we are 2 disabled ladies trying to car share. Anyone out there help please, we have rung up various places but no one has an answer. Please do not say pay for tax because that is not the question.

It would seem there is no actual way round this. The vehicle is only for the use of, or for, the person who has the exemption. That person does not have to be the owner or even the registered keeper but the vehicle would still only be for the needs of that named person. I would expect that as long as she is receiving the necessary benefits, has a blue badge in her name and the vehicle insured etc for her to drive then nothing would be done about the "misuse" but the risk is that the exemption could be withdrawn - it would make an interesting test case. I would think the only "legal" way for multiple users on a private vehicle would be to tax it although there is an exemption for "vehicles used by organisations providing transport for the disabled". Would using that relatively small amount of her mobility supplement be such a huge price to pay for peace of mind ? Have you spoken to DVLA ?

Your daughter I assume also has a VED free exemption. There is as far as I'm aware no workaround to this. Try a [long shot] specific written appeal to the DVLA and see what they say. The only way to do it legally would be to lease a Motability and give up your own currently owned vehicle.
