New front & back door

Hello , I've been reading through some of the posts on new front doors and wondering if anyone is able to help me.

I'm looking for a new front and back door and have so far received two quotes which were both approx £2250 for a standard upvc back door and a composite door (nothing special, not a Rockdoor!) with side and top window panels. I thought this was quite high but as both were the same cost assume this is the going rate?

Both quotes were from local independent fitters - (neither of whom seem to want the job anyway as didn't return calls!) Im now wondering whether it might be more cost effective to get a wooden front door and a carpenter to fit it? I like the idea of a composite door but £2k plus seems a bit much.

if anyone has advice or recommendations I'd be really grateful. Im in the Suffolk area.

Find a local firm with references you can check out. If the two you've tried aren't returning your calls on a two grand job to fit two doors then I'd suspect that they're either deliberately pricing you out of the job coz they're too busy or they're conmen.

I was in an affluent town last week and picked up a local advertising magazine with a number of glossy colour pages for doors and windows. Two companies were quoting prices for composite front doors. One said from £960, the other £1135. This shows three things. First it is not a cut throat competitive market. Second that your price sounds high. (I accept that you have a sidelight and top panel, but this does not justify the price doubling.) Third a lower priced town, or a company without expensive glossy advertising, could shave a few hundreds off this price.

I suggest you shop around and widen your net.

But if you go down the route of a timber door then that is a fresh batch of questions and prices.

Thanks so much for your replies.

Furts - I notice you have offered a lot of advice on this forum on doors, and think this is what gave me the idea of a timber door. I'd be happy with this option but don't know a chippie, or what questions to ask. Do side and top windows add a lot to the cost? My neighbour had both doors done for £1950 two years ago, but by a friend who no longer lives in the area. Even this seems pricey! I don't live in an affluent area, and certainly don't live in an affluent house - small end of terrace.

Both were recommendations who I suspect didn't really want the jobs, but I'm now out of recommendations and will be reliant on Google, checkatrade, etc unless anyone on here can suggest anywhere?

Two independent fitters offering very similar prices.... might both be sourcing their doors from the same (expensive) local supplier. Might be worth trying another couple of quotes. Not returning calls at this stage isn't exactly a promising start.

If it's just a refit of doors that are there, that's expensive. If it involves the refit of the frame, making good, and non-standard door sizes, it's not quite so bad, but not cheap.

Try to get recommendations. I know some bits of Suffolk well... It's a big county.... which bit? Bury/Sudbury I can help with, Ipswich is a foreign land far, far away!

I had a front composite door fitted for just under £700 by a local company.

Have a look at this site http://www.valuedoorsuk.co.uk/

I have used them for a composite door and a upvc one and found them to be very good and you can price up styles and types of doors online..
Also there are no hidden extras the price on the site is the price you pay
It seems they have a fitter in Ipswich too http://www.valuedoors.co.uk/upvc-doors-ipswich

I got a new UPVC back door fitted 3 years ago. I did get a discount because I had used the firm before so the £500 or so which I paid would normally have been about £650 to £700. I haven't bought a new front door yet but that won't be UPVC so I assume it will cost more.
