conservatory roof

A builder friend fitted me a new conservatory roof last year, he is a good builder but does not normally do conservatories, the problem is that when the sun comes out there are lots of quite loud pops and bangs, when the sun goes behind a cloud there are more pops and bangs and so on, it is obviously the polycarbonate roof expanding and contracting but the noises are loud enough to make you jump, and if you are asleep wake you up. Is there anything I can do please?

Hi Maggiewill,
I'm afraid it's quite normal, this is my 2nd house with a conseratory, both have been the same.
Plastic guttering also does the same.
The only way I can see of preventing it would be to somehow shade the conseratory roof but this would cut out your light.
I think it's one of those things you have to live with I'm afraid.See you on the dark side of the moon0 -
Yep, ours does that too. Not sure it's loud enough to wake me up but it is definitely very irritating.Stompa0

They all make that noise the other option is to have a glass roof which is more expensive and you have to keep looking at all the birds mess on it or clean the roof daily?0

You still have to look at the birds mess with a polycarbonate roof, and clean it periodically.Stompa0 -

Yeah true but with a polycarbonate roof you only get to see the outline of a shadow with a glass roof you get to see it in full technicolour in 3D if you get my drift.I live near the coast have you seen the size of seagulls0 -

Hmmm, not so sure about that - ours is pretty transparent (despite being 10+ years old) so you can see through it very well. It's pigeons here - and why is it when they land on the roof and you give it a hard thump just where they're walking - they never take the slightest notice? (I guess pigeons are just extremely dim!)Stompa0
