since when did diesel become cheaper than petrol? Historically it has always been more expensive but at least two local petrol stations (one is Tesco) have diesel at 1p cheaper than petrol!

You must be young! Diesel was cheaper than petrol a mere 14 years ago in 2001. ;)

It was always cheaper - "they"/the Govt wanted people to use diesel, they said it was better.... they lied and we've been done up like kippers.

People bought diesels because they were cheaper to run.

Then when they became popular we'd stuff like Euro IV legislation which brought in DPFs etc, and cocked the whole thing up with regards to reliability.

With ever tightening legislation, its becoming too expensive to build compliant diesel engines, hence manufacturers have started re-focussing on petrol cars and we've stuff like the 1.0 Ecoboost from Ford.

Unless i was doing 18,000+ miles a year, i wouldnt consider a modern diesel, and even then, i'd probably go for a hybrid like the Prius over a diesel, even though even as recently as five years ago i'd have been a huge diesel advocate.

I'm not young but don't recall diesel being cheaper back then. Must have been for a brief period. I've only owned diesel vehicles for the past 10 years, although I'm not entirely sure they're any cheaper to run than petrol cars these days :o

Saudi Arabia have stopped selling crude oil and started refining it and producing, amoing other things, diesel. Therefore flooding the market and as we all know demand dictates price. Now there is more out there the wholesale price drops so pump prices eventually drop.

I'm in my mid 40s and clearly remember diesel always been cheaper than petrol, usually by 2 or 3 pence a litre

    Same here.

When I first qualified for a car on my works scheme in 1997 I wanted a diesel but there were non available because demand for them was higher due to the running costs being cheaper.
