My ma treated me to some out of date pasta from Aldi the other day. Spinach Ricotta (or whatever you call it); the stuff you put in boiling water for a few minutes and it's cooked. You can get this sort of stuff anywhere. However despite being completely (and almost hermetically) sealed, it's 3 months out of date. She thought she was getting a bargain and I hate to be rude but it contains some dairy elements (or so it says!). Consquently I tried to explain that's a health risk. Surely stuff like that can't be allowed to be sold after 3 months!

I would be very happy to eat dried pasta a couple of years after its best before date0

Even if the filling contains dairy? That can't be wise surely!0

I envy you the ability to be so discerning. The rest of us, especially on here, use what we call the "sniff test" ...
1. Open it.
2. Sniff it.
3. If you don't pass out, cook it and eat it.
4. If you do pass out, throw it away when you come round.
And don't call me Shirley.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

It will be fine! I eat a lot of out of date stuff and am fine!0

It would be fresh pasta, not dried?
I would take it back to the store if it's not too far out of your way, and request a refund and/or replacement.0 -
I didn't say it was dried. It's the stuff you get that has fillings and you jsut boil it for a couple of minutes.
personally it wouldn't bother me but for the ingredients that won't last.
It's not about discernment, I just don't want to end up with the runs
No point taking it back, it was dirt cheap anyway - unsurprisingly.0 -

Was it a 'Best before' or a 'Use by' date?
It's against the law to sell foods after the 'Use by' date.0 -
It's made from fresh egg pasta, which is why it needs to be kept chilled. I'll eat most things with the sniff and look test but I wouldn't risk that, I had some pumpkin filled pasta like that from Sainsburys which I was going to eat past its date (my fault for leaving it in the fridge for so long) it was unopened but furry. Compost bin for that.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

The trouble is that there are two virtually identical looking products.
One (the fresh pasta, sold chilled) would need to be eaten before the "Use By" date, the other (dried filled pasta) would probably be okay, and probably only has a "Best Before" date, anyway.0
