Northern Norway ( Tromso) in winter - clothing

Myself and my partner were in Tromso this February gone and it was amazing. The weather was cold but not bitterly so. We were managing with a base layer and outer layer while walking around Tromso itself. The temps were around -7 degrees for the 4 days we were there. As other people have mentioned, there is a thick layer of ice on everything out there so the shoe grips are handy if you wanna stay on your feet. We got yaktrax and found them great. You might wanna practice getting them on your boots before you go though, they can be kinda fiddly.
We got all our stuff in Decathlon before we went, base layers, fleeces, snow boots and snow trousers and jackets. All for a fairly reasonable amount (not 100% sure but maybe around £80-100 each?) You should also invest in 2 pairs of gloves. 1 tight pair you wear all the time, and a pair of skiing gloves to wear over them. They are needed - ESPECIALLY if you're out at nighttime. As mentioned earlier, hats with ear flaps are also a must.
If you're going on the northern lights tour at night (we went with Guide Gunnar - spectacular tour) you'll have get on the full gear (base layer, fleece layer, wool jumper, outer layer, scarf, 2 hats, 2 gloves, 2 socks, ski boots - toilet visits were time consuming!) . It was -22 degrees in one of the spots we were looking for the lights so you HAVE to be wrapped up as much as possible. Also the huskie sledding was incredible and they provided us with huge padded boiler suits to wear while on the sleigh. You felt like an oompa loompa waddling around but it was so worth it and they were free.
I'm so jealous that you're heading up there, it is a stunning place and all the people were so friendly and helpful. (we also took the Hurtigruten cruise around the north cape which was a mistake - got stuck in a storm with hurricane force winds. Terrifying and stomach churning). Tromso was beautiful and I wouldn't hesitate to go back. Enjoy your trip!0 -
Tromsø... very nice... I was there in Feb 13 when it was about -5ºC positively warm after Northern Norway at -16ºC.
Conventional wisdom is to take layers - I wore 4 or 5 layers - so you can add/shed layers as required. It is dry (low humidity) in the Arctic even on the coast, so the outer layer does not need to be waterproof but you may sweat so breathable layers are good if expensive.
Personally I wore Rohan gear but it is sensibly priced only in sales (one finished yesterday ¡) or perhaps Kathmandu.
Should be a cracking trip; have you worked out how to take photos of the faint northern lights ?0 -
